For Ken Eckert, racing has been a family affair for as long as he can remember.
From the age of two months, Eckert has been attending races throughout the region, first as a spectator watching his uncle, the late "Chargin'" Charlie Eckert, and then later as a driver himself.
As one would expect, the bug hit Eckert early on. He served on his uncle's pit crew as a teenager, and after Charlie Eckert retired in the early 90's, Ken began to consider a racing career of his own.
He would do exactly that, starting in the roadrunner class at Big Diamond Raceway in 1998. He quickly found success, and would regularly finish in the top ten with several top five finishes over the next six years in what is considered one of the most competitive divisions at that track.
The Roadrunner class would give Eckert the experience he needed to advance his racing career, and with that under his belt he made the decision to move up to the "beginner" Sportsman Modified class in 2005. While the division was quite competitive, Eckert felt racing with the best drivers in the region would be even better, and the decision was made to move up to the main 358 Small Block Modified class.
The move proved to be the right one -- in one of his first starts in the division at Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, New York, he placed 11th in a field of 25 cars after starting second to last. Since then and throughout the 2006 season, Eckert has consistently shown that he would be a fierce competitor in the years to come.
